About Electrolysis Specialists of Texas

We are so very passionate about electrolysis because we too were clients who experienced great pain and disappointment from other types of hair removal. Electrolysis was the ONLY solution we found for permanent results. Even the older electrolysis equipment was extremely painful and left our skin a complete wreck for weeks to come. For this reason we have chosen to use Apilus 27.12MHz equipment, which provides gentler, less painful and quicker results than any other electrolysis equipment available.

The FDA identifies Electrolysis as the ONLY permanent hair removal method! Our Electrologists have 600+ hours of certified training through the prestigious Academy for Advanced Electrolysis Studies, an Académie Dectro accredited school! This is important since Texas does not have licensure and there are no minimum training hours required. Electrolysis is a highly skilled profession, much like playing a musical instrument, it takes much practice to become proficient.

Electrolysis is a process that takes multiple visits, typically every-two-weeks for approximately 6 to 8 months before the growth begins to taper off. Clients typically reach completion within 1.5 to 2 years.

Wow! Such a small amount of time to have hair PERMANENTLY GONE FOREVER!

EXPLAINATION

A fine probe is inserted into the natural opening of the hair follicle where current is applied, killing the hair follicle if adequate hydration molecules are present. If sufficient hydration is present, it will cause the hair to detach and we take tweezers and extract the detached hair, which should just slide right out. This means hydrated follicles are going to be very important for successful electrolysis! Hydrated skin and follicles are a product of drinking small amounts of water throughout the day, and consuming fatty acids and whole food sources of vitamin A like carrots. If you have a strict diet that cuts out all consumption of fat or you fast more than 20 hours, you will not have hydrated skin and follicles. It does not take much water either, so no guzzling water before your appointments. Drinking no more than 4 ounces of water in one sitting, having this small amount several times spread throughout the day is key at hydrating skin and follicles. 100% pure coconut water is a good alternative too! Avoiding products that have Retinols, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, hyaluronic acid, which are typically in products that target acne and wrinkles, youth defying and anti-aging serums, skin lightening and brightening, tanning and products that reduce ingrown hair. These type products push the hydration deeper into the skin and away from the follicles where we need the hydration for the electrolysis to work. If you cannot get away from using products with these ingredients then you will have stronger reactions from the electrolysis, increased redness, swelling, scabbing, etc. and most definitely chances of scaring your skin. This is due to the electrolysis causing damage to the surrounding tissue instead of the hair follicle itself. So, hydrated follicles will get you quicker results and avoid chances of scarring.

One pulse is not always sufficient to kill a follicle off, sometimes two, three or even more are required to kill a follicle. There are many factors that decipher how many pulses will be required to kill a follicle: the amount of androgens feeding the hair follicles, if you have ever pulled the hair (each pull strengthens the follicles, causes ingrown hair and promotes surrounding dormant follicles that are not producing hair to start producing hair), and medications being taken (these are only a few examples). You MUST stop pulling hair out once you begin electrolysis, so no more tweezing, waxing threading, epilating, anything that pulls the hair out. In between appointments you may trim, shave, use depilatories, or simply nothing (schedule shorter appointments weekly or every-few-days). If you get into a habit of trimming or shaving between appointments, please do not trim or shave 2 days before your appointment. We need about 3mm of growth to be able to perform the electrolysis.

REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS

Hair grows in cycles. This cyclic nature of hair growth is what causes electrolysis to be such a process. All the hair you have growing in an area does not all grow out at once; there are many follicles very close together and they take turns pushing out. Much of the time we think it is the same hair pushing out only a few days after being tweezed however this is incorrect. If a hair is tweezed, has electrolysis or sluffs off naturally to rejuvenate, it takes that single follicle 3 months before it can produce another hair. For this reason, typically you will not see results for the first 3 months. This is because it will take 3 months to give one pulse to every hair you have growing in the area. That means if you are coming in every-two-weeks for a full clearing, you will have 6 appointments before you even begin to see results. At 3 months you will have less hair and the hair left will have already been damaged by the first pulse so it will be much finer in diameter and the growth will be much slower. It will take another 3 months to give another pulse to all the remaining follicles producing hair, and a 3rd pulse to all the remaining follicles will take another 3 months. Typically, we are getting rid of the bulk of the hair within the first 6 to 8 months if you have full clearings at each appointment every-two-weeks. Then you will go into maintenance where your appointments have begun to taper off, where you only come in maybe every-other-month, or so, until the hair stops growing altogether.

If you do not have the time in your schedule or your budget for full clearings every-two-weeks, we will work with you to set appointments that are within your time schedule and budget. Electrolysis is safe enough to have everyday if you desired, we just do not want you going beyond two weeks to be able to reach completion as quick as possible.

TATTOOS

It is possible for ink to be removed from a tattoo by electrolysis. This is very rare but can happen, especially if the ink is very shallow from a homemade tattoo or similar. Typically, a touch up of the tattoo, after finishing the electrolysis process is sufficient.

OBTAINING THE QUICKEST RESULTS POSSIBLE

There are 3 things that will give you the quickest results possible:

*Keeping your follicles well hydrated

*Resisting the urge to pull the hair

*Keeping your appointments consistent and in a timely manner

MEDICATION WARNINGS

If you are currently using or have used Retinoid or Isotretinoin products in the last 6 months, including but not limited to: Absorica, Accutane, Amnesteem, Claravis, Isotretinoin, Myorisan, Retinyl Palmitate, Retinaldehyde, Retinoids, Tretinoin, Tazarotene, Zenatane, etc. you cannot have electrolysis until 6 months after you have last used the products. This is because it takes approximately 6 months for follicles to regain the hydration necessary for successful electrolysis after taking these types of products.

If you have used Hydroquinone products in the last 12 months, including but not limited to Obagi Nu-Derm Sunfader, Obagi Nu-Derm Clear, Obagi Nu-Derm Blender, Obagi Elastiderm, and Blanche, you will need to wait 12 months before you may begin electrolysis. Scarring may appear quickly if beginning electrolysis too soon after using these products.

If you are taking antibiotics, antihistamines, anti-inflammatories, please wait to schedule an appointment until 7 to 14 days after you have stopped taking these medications for the hydration to build back up in your follicles for successful electrolysis. If you are taking any of these medications on a regular basis per doctor recommendation, you are not precluded from having electrolysis however you must be more conscious of your hydration and should expect a longer process to reach completion.

You should expect a longer process if you are taking cortisone, cortisol, steroids, and hormones (including bioidentical hormones, testosterone pellets, and oral contraceptives) and if you have any hormonal issues (PCOS, thyroid problems) and if you live a high stress lifestyle that causes higher production of cortisol.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR AN APPOINTMENT

To acheive optimal results and avoid scarring:

*Come well hydrated but not guzzling water

*Arrive with 3mm growth(do not shave/trim for 2 days)

*Do not workout on the day of your appointment

*Avoid caffeine before the appointment

*Avoid sun exposure 3 days before the appointment

*Avoid products with hydroquinone, retinals, retinoids, glycolic acid, salicylic acids, hyaluronic acid, usually found in products that target acne or wrinkles, anti-aging products, youth defying serums, skin lightening and brightning products and those that prevent ingrown hair(only on areas where you will have the electrolysis)

*If bikini area, please wear lose clothing, white cotton undergarments WITHOUT dyes and bring a towel from home if you would like us to drape the area

AFTERCARE INSTRUCTIONS

*do not touch the area

*do not apply make-up, anything with heavy oils, just let your skin breathe

*do NOT apply hydrocortisone, cortisone, triple antibiotic

*ONLY apply aloe vera, if needed

*if on face, please put a fresh pillow case on before bed

*if on body, please put fresh sheets or fresh pajamas on before bed

*avoid hot steamy showers, sweating, activity that revs up the body and opens the pores and follicles

*you may return to your regular routine and regimen the very next day

*NO MORE PULLING OF THE HAIR! Once you begin electrolysis you must stop tweezing, waxing, threading; any technique that pulls the hair out must be stopped
